Calligraphy Set Tiziano, by Bortoletti. The art of writing The quill and inkpot gave rise to the first manuscripts in Western civilization. Calligraphy – or in other words, the art of writing beautifully – was developed as a consequence of this wonderful invention. The unique softness of goose quills made it possible to write fluidly and voluptuously; however, they had one major drawback: they required continual sharpening and dipping in the ink. It was only in 1830 that the first steel nibs were produced for mass consumption – in Birmingham, England – and the era of the nib and inkpot began.
